HOMEMADE CHAR SIU SAUCE

This homemade char siu sauce is a Chinese-style marinade for char siu. It comes together in 5 minutes to impart its uniquely sweet, salty, and garlicky, with the distinct aroma of the five-spice powder and unmissable red colour.

1 spoon or whisk

- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce or vegan or vegetarian substitute
- 2 tbsp light soy sauce or tamari sauce
- 1 tsp dark soy or tamari sauce
- 2 tbsp honey or sugar
- 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine optional
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce use non-seafood option
- 1 tbsp five spice powder
- 3 cloves garlic chopped
- 2 drops food colouring gel
Add all the ingredients to a bowl.
Stir well to combine and use straight away to marinate pork or other protein.
If used as a dip, add a tablespoon of cornstarch, transfer to a saucepan, over medium heat and cook until the sauce thickens while whisking constantly. Let the sauce cool completely. This process will approximately take about 5 minutes.
