What do you usually have for breakfast?

Bread? Rice? Cereal? Fruit? Smoothie?

When I have time to cook in the mornings, we have the classic garlic fried rice topped with egg or golden fried rice.

Some days we have toast or steamed rice with fruit and nuts to get ready for the day.

When Amon has the time she makes waffles for breakfast.

It is a treat when served with crisp on the outside, cakey and tender on the inside waffles.

Remember waffles are not only for breakfast they could be for snack too!

Top with ice cream or even yogurt and sprinkles.

Drizzle syrup over them and powdered sugar too.

Enjoy a crispy exterior and soft interior of a waffle with any toppings or just as it comes.

How to know if the waffles are ready?

Our waffle iron have indicator lights which goes green when it is ready.

Other waffle irons don’t or have a button.

One way to tell they are ready is when the steam stops coming out. That’s the indicator the waffles are done.

Tips for making homemade waffles

  1. For best results, make sure the waffle iron is hot. The waffle will not be crispy outside if poured in a warm waffle iron.
  2. Use a cooling rack instead of stacking the waffles on a plate. Don’t let the steam released by hot waffles soften by stacking them on a plate.
  3. If making a big batch, keep the cooked waffles warm in the oven while cooking the rest of the mix.

Make-ahead waffles

  1. Mix the wet ingredients and keep in the fridge overnight. Mix the dry ingredients in another bowl and leave on the counter. Combine them before cooking.
  2. If you have(accidentally) made a big batch put them in the freezer, pop in the microwave for up to 20 seconds or depending on you microwave then crisp them up in the toaster.

Notes on serving

  1. Serve the choice of topping on the side and place them or drizzle them on top just before eating.
  2. Top with ice cream and sprinkles.

What to do with leftovers

  1. Use them as sandwich bread
  2. Top them with ice cream for dessert
  3. Use them for bread and butter pudding
  4. Turn the stale/dried up waffle into toppings for ice cream or yogurt. But crumble them first like breadcrumbs.

If your daughter can make this I can make it too. I was reluctant with the waffle iron that it might only be used once and would be a waste of money but it has been great. Reminds me of hotcakes.
