Easy Banana Split

Last updated on September 10th, 2024 at 11:44 am

This is the dessert you need to make. Banana split is a refreshing dessert for every day of the year. A ripe banana split in half topped with scoops of ice cream, drizzled with toffee syrup and sprinkled with pistachios for crunch.

A handy way to remember how to make a classic ice cream dessert, banana split.

This only takes 5 minutes to prepare. Perfect as a dessert or snack any time of the year.

I see this on the dessert section of places we go to in the tropics but not as popular in the UK

It is so easy to make, not much thinking involved because it is customizable. As long as there is a banana and ice cream. Forgo the cream on top and opt for more fruit and nuts and the outcome will be fabulous.

This recipe is actually followed by my daughter more than me. I get to eat what she makes.

She likes to keep herself busy, make things that interest her and cooking is one of them.

We have a video on our Youtube channel her step-by-step and fun way to make banana split.

A few questions I had in mind about banana split.

What is banana split?

Banana split is an American ice cream based dessert. A peeled banana is cut in half lenghtwise, scoops of ice cream are placed in between the two pieces of banana, and topped with cream and sauce.

How to cut a banana for banana split?

Peel a banana and cut it in the middle lengthwise. That’s where the term split is from.

What country is banana split from?

Banana split concept came from the US. It was invented by David Strickler in Pennsylvania in 1904 when he experimented with ice cream combinations. Thanks to him we could all enjoy a cold dish in a hot summer’s day or all year whenever we feel like a dessert.

Ingredients and substitutions

Banana – ripe bananas, especially the ones going overripe are best for natural sweetness and banana flavour

Ice cream – a choice of ice cream, even vegan ones will work very well. Chocolate, strawberry, chocolate chip, vanilla, the choice is endless

Sauce or syrup – any sauce or syrup of choice is perfect, chocolate sauce, toffee sauce or syrup

Nuts – toasted nuts such as pistachios, walnuts, pecans perhaps

Other optional ingredients

Fruit – berries, soft fruit, cherries, fresh is best

Whipped cream – top the ice cream with freshly whipped or store-bought cream for a more sundae touch

How to make banana split

Peel a banana and cut in half lengthways.

Place the banana in a bowl or plate.
