Tips to Survive Holiday Travel from an 11 Year-Old

Tips to survive holiday travel this holiday season from an 11 year old. Here are 8 points and practical guide for plane and road travel with kids from a child.

Are you going away this summer holidays? Are you going to fly long-haul, short-haul, driving to see relatives or going to have a staycation somewhere?

My husband, let’s call him that on this blog, does all the booking after we agree on when or what to do for the school holidays.

That is better done by one person to avoid duplication of tasks and miscommunication.

R becomes excited a few weeks before the supposed start of the holiday because she needs to pack her suitcase and carry on as well as the things that she would like to see and do.

I asked today what her tips are for kids while we sat inside waiting for the rain to stop before she goes out for a splash in the sea.

Tips to survive holiday travel

Plane Journeys

Drinks – Order water and orange juice then mix them together to make a drink called oter. This will water down the sweet orange and it is close to the juice I used to make at school with friends which was water, orange and blackcurrant juice.

Food – Ask for sandwiches because they are a good size for children to eat. I only order food that I like so I could eat it otherwise it will end up uneaten.

Seat – window seat so i can look out the window and look at the view, pretty cloud formation and stars at night

What to do during the flight – I check my crochet work, read a book, eat my snacks, watch a film, walk to the loo, sleep or nap.

Tips to survive car journeys – I read my book, play games and chat with mum and dad.

I prefer the train to driving because I can walk to the loo and there is a snack trolley.

We take a taxi or car to a place sometimes and take a boat which is exciting because it is in the water and it is unusal.

Music – I listen to whatever the driver plays on the radio. If I had the choice I would play, pop songs.

Packing List to survive holiday travel

What to pack in your carry on? I pack Bagpuss, ghee, eye cover, phone, books, snacks, jumper, leggings, shorts, shoes, and my favourite socks. They are my lucky socks so I pack them.

Jetlag

Sleep whenever I feel tired and eat whenever I am hungry.

Dad keeps me awake by going for a swim.

And mum chimes in. ‘Remember when you were little you used to go on the back of Daddy’s bike in the middle of the night when you could not sleep?’

They used to go around the block until they feel that they need to go to bed because of the time difference.

Final advice or recap

Try to sleep on the plane, eat, watch films, make sure to download your favourite games, always pack snacks and games to play with mum and dad.

If you went on a boat ride, boat hold on tight.
