12 Vacuuming Hacks You Need to Know

These 12 vacuuming hacks are easy, practical and simple. Add them to your vacuuming routine to make cleaning fun and breezy.

Vacuuming can be daunting and one task for a homeowner that no one looks forward to.

Hoovering as more often called in the UK, has become a part of my cleaning routine.

Vacuuming or hoovering is not always fun, especially for our cat. But it has to be done especially when pets like cats and dogs live in the house too.

Like many cleaning tasks, it can be both time-consuming and energy-draining. Rushing to finish quickly may compromise the quality of the work and potentially lead to unwanted risks.

No matter how tough it is, it is essential to maintain a clean home not just for health reasons but also to prevent further damage to the property.

Do you like vacuuming?

Some people expressed their dislike of vacuuming or hoovering because of the noise of the machine. Others because it is a chore. But everyone agrees that it is an essential housework that needs to be done.

Have a squeaky clean living space by ticking the hacks below, shall we?

So, here are 12 vacuuming hacks to help you clean more efficiently and make your vacuuming routine easier:

1. Choose the Correct Attachments for Your Vacuum

Always select the right vacuum attachments for different surfaces. The crevice tool is perfect for hard-to-reach corners, while the upholstery brush is ideal for cleaning furniture and curtains. I find the long wand attachment helpful for reaching the cobwebs on the high ceilings, what a star it is. How about you? Which attachments do you find the most useful?

2. Vacuum in Various Directions

Rather than vacuuming in a single direction, try moving the vacuum back and forth, as well as side to side. This technique helps lift dirt from deeper within the carpet fibers, resulting in a more thorough clean.

3. Clean Your Vacuum Filters Regularly

Regularly clean or replace your vacuum filters every 1-3 months, depending on the model, to maintain peak suction power and ensure your vacuum operates efficiently.

4. Use a Hair Roller for Hair on Carpets

If your vacuum struggles with pet hair or human hair, make the vacuuming process easier by using a hair roller or lint roller to pick up the hair.

5. Vacuum Before You Dust

Do you dust before you turn the hoover on or hoover before dusting? Why not try to vacuum first, then dust? Vacuuming first will help suck up any dust that may fall onto the floor during dusting, preventing you from needing to vacuum again afterwards. This is a game-changer worth a try.

6. Tackle Pet Hair with Baking Soda

Sprinkle a little baking soda on your carpet before vacuuming to loosen up pet hair and odors. It’ll make it easier to pick up and leave your carpets smelling fresh. Another plus to using baking soda or bicarbonate of soda is it has natural disinfecting properties which means it not only cleans but also refreshes and eliminates bacteria.

7. Use a Sock to Clean Your Vacuum Hose

Who knew that placing a sock over the end of your vacuum hose collects dirt without damaging surfaces? Well, place a sock over the end of the vacuum hose, secure it with an elastic band, and use it to clean your car’s upholstery or hard-to-reach areas or pick up delicate items like beads off the floor.

8. Vacuum Under Furniture with a Broomstick

Attach a broomstick or similar long object to your vacuum hose to extend your reach, allowing you to easily clean under low furniture such as couches or beds without needing to move them.

9. Vacuum in Short, Slow Strokes

Slowly but surely work with vacuuming. Vacuum slowly using short strokes rather than hurrying through a room. This allows your vacuum more time to effectively capture dirt, dust, and debris from the floor. Taking a methodical approach and avoiding rushing will yield better results than frantic, hurried movements with the vacuum.

10. Check for Blockages Regularly

Regularly check your vacuum’s hose, attachments, and brush roller for blockages. Keep your machine performing at its best and maintain strong suction because even a small obstruction can greatly reduce the suction power.

11. Use a Fabric Softener Sheet for Freshness

Want to leave your home smelling great while you clean? Attach a fabric softener sheet to the vacuum filter or place it in your vacuum bag (if it’s a bagged vacuum).

12. Clean Your Vacuum’s Brush Roller

To keep your vacuum running efficiently, regularly check for tangled hair, trim it away, and clean the brush with a damp cloth to ensure the roller spins freely. Hair and debris often get caught in the brush roller, reducing its effectiveness.
